Worldwide General Aviation Shipments Rise

by Mike Godfrey, Tax-News.com, Washington

27 November 2014

Total worldwide general aviation airplane shipments increased 5.7 percent to 1,678, and billings rose to USD16bn, up 4 percent, in the third quarter of 2014, according to the General Aviation Manufacturers Association (GAMA).

Piston-engine airplane shipments increased 9.2 percent to 806 units in the first nine months of 2014, compared with 738 airplane shipments in the same period last year. Turboprop airplane shipments were down 3.7 percent, to 412 units this year. Business jet shipments were up compared with last year, from 421 units to 460 units in 2014.

GAMA's President and CEO, Pete Bunce, said that the recovery of the business jet and piston engine market segments reflects wider optimism about the the general aviation market.

"New products are helping to fuel our industry's continued growth as we continue to emerge from the recession," he said.

However, other data from GAMA shows a sharp decline in the number of helicopter deliveries this year compared with 2013. The rotorcraft industry delivered 648 helicopters in the first nine months of 2014, a decline of approximately one-third compared with the same period last year. These deliveries were worth USD2.6bn, a decline of 20.1 percent. These figures contrast strongly with healthy sales figures witnessed in recent years.

Bunce hoped that following the mid-term congressional elections in the United States, lawmakers will turn their attention to renewing important temporary tax breaks that have previously benefited the industry, especially the research and development tax credit and bonus depreciation, both of which expired at the end of 2013.
