United Arab Emirates Introduces Landmark Yacht Code

by Jason Gorringe, Tax-News.com, London

26 February 2015

The UAE has introduced the first ever yacht code for private yachts longer than 24 meters.

The code, which was launched by the Federal Authority for Land and Maritime Transport, sets out a number of rules and regulations designed to ensure the safety of non-commercial yachts. Unlike current regulations, it does not limit the maximum load or number of passengers provided that the applicable safety rules are applied.

Omar Abu Omar, Chief Operation Officer of Tasneef – established in 2012 as the first classification society in the Gulf Cooperation Council – said the yacht code fills a longstanding void. Speaking at the UAE Yacht Code Conference, he said: "There was a clear absence of a regulatory framework for large private yachts; the cargo ship rules were applied on the large private yachts and as such the number of people on board were limited (to a maximum of 12) as well as the Gross Tonnage (to a maximum of 3000 tonnes). Further, the absence of clear regulations has led to different practices between flag states and class societies, and as a result, many exemptions were issued to the large private yachts due to non-compliance. By developing dedicated yacht regulations, the UAE took a major step in filling this gap."
