US Taxpayers Call For New Obamacare Levies To Be Shelved

by Mike Godfrey, Tax-News.com, Washington

07 August 2017

New levies under Obamacare that are due to be introduced from January 1, 2018, should be deferred, Americans for Tax Reform, a lobby group, has said.

Following on from Republicans' failure to repeal and replace Obamacare, ATR said that the Administration should use the remaining months of the year to delay implementation of the health insurance tax and medical device tax. ATR said that these taxes would impact middle- and low-income families, as well as small businesses.

The group said that the health insurance tax burden would total USD14.3bn in 2018, half of which would be paid by those earning under USD50,000 a year. It said that the tax could cost up to 286,00 new jobs and cost USD33bn in sales by 2023.

ATR said that the medical device tax would also impact small businesses. It cited estimates that the medical device tax could lead to 25,000 lost jobs by 2021.

"Small businesses account for half of all jobs in the US and two-thirds of new jobs in recent decades," said ATR. "So the health insurance tax and medical device tax mean businesses across the country can spend less on investing in new equipment, hiring new workers, or providing higher wages."
