US Commits Funds For East Asia Maritime 'Security'

by Mike Godfrey, Tax-News.com, Washington

25 December 2013

The United States' Secretary of State, John Kerry, has confirmed a grant worth USD40m for the Philippines to "support the country's maritime security efforts."

The grant, to be provided over three years through the US Global Security Contingency Fund, is to bolster defense cooperation between the two nations, "to secure the Philippines maritime borders and to combat terrorism," Kerry said.

Speaking a joint press conference with the Philippines' Foreign Affairs Minister, Kerry explained: "We have committed USD40m for a new initiative to improve the Philippines maritime security and maritime domain awareness."

Later, he added: "We strongly support the Association of South East Asian Nation's (ASEAN) efforts with China to move quickly to conclude the Code of Conduct as a key to reducing the risk of accidents or miscalculation. In that process, we think that claimants have the responsibility to clarify their claims and align their claims with international law. That is the way to proceed in resolving any disputes in the South China Sea peacefully."

The US support for the Philippines comes amid growing tensions between the Philippines, as well as a number of other territories in the region, and China over disputed maritime territory in the South East China sea. China has urged the United States to allow the region to negotiate a resolution without outside interference.
