US And Singapore Sign Aviation Security Pact

by Mary Swire, Tax-News.com, Hong Kong

05 June 2008

The governments of Singapore and the United States on 3rd June signed an agreement on aviation security cooperation in Washington DC.

The Memorandum of Cooperation (MoC) on Aviation Security was signed by BG (NS) Choi Shing Kwok, Permanent Secretary for Singapore's Ministry of Transport, and Gale Rossides, Deputy Administrator for the US Transportation Security Administration (TSA).

Singapore is the first country in the Asia Pacific region to conclude a Memorandum of Cooperation (MoC) with the TSA to work on the development and enhancement of civil aviation security.

The MoC formalises bilateral cooperation on aviation security, and signifies a step forward for both parties to further engage and cooperate with each other on aviation security projects.

Under the MoC, both parties agree to enhance bilateral cooperation on areas such as aviation security policy, procedures and standards, technology, operations and technical expertise.

For instance, both countries could work together on testing new aviation security equipment to improve security screening measures while upholding passenger facilitation and efficiency. Regular dialogues, joint seminars, forums and conferences could also be organised to increase exchange of information and sharing of best practices on civil aviation security.

Commenting on the MoC, Choi stated that: “Aviation security is critical to the global civil aviation industry. The Memorandum of Cooperation on Aviation Security with the US Transportation Security Administration builds further upon our very good level of relations and cooperation with each other."

"With it, we will have even greater opportunities to collaborate on aviation security policies, procedures and equipment development. Through such cooperation, we can further enhance the level and standards of aviation security for the benefit of air travellers.”
