UK Pursuing New Free Trade Deal Network

The UK's Prime Minister, Theresa May, will use the G20 summit to hold exploratory talks with a number of countries on the possibility of new, post-Brexit bilateral free trade agreements.

Speaking ahead of the event, which is being held in China, May said: "We are going to make a success of Brexit and one way we will do that is by playing to Britain's strengths as a great trading nation and forging our own new trade deals around the world. We are already building up the necessary expertise to go after these trade deals and, here in China, I will be seizing the opportunity to talk to leaders from countries like Australia who have already made clear that they want to strike a deal once we have left the EU."

The UK Government has confirmed that teams of UK and Australian officials will this week hold talks in Australia on the possibility of establishing a trade negotiating team. It said the Australian Government has offered to second experienced negotiators to the UK, to help it establish a new trade policy team.

The UK's Cabinet Committee on EU Exit and Trade will also meet this week. It will discuss the principles that will guide the UK's post-Brexit approach to trade, including further work to prioritize early free trade discussions.
