UK Lawmakers Call For Tax Breaks For Hiring Ex-offenders

by Jason Gorringe, Tax-News.com, London

21 December 2016

UK Members of Parliament have called for the Government to reduce the National Insurance bill of employers who hire ex-offenders.

The Work and Pensions Committee said in a report criticizing the prison system for failing to prevent inmates recidivism, that the DWP should "develop practical guidance to help employers recruit ex-offenders."

"The Committee applauds the efforts of employers like Timpson and Virgin Trains who recognize the benefits of employing and supporting ex-offenders, but 50 percent of employers would not even consider offering any ex-offender a job," the Committee said. "Employers need to be encouraged to change their recruitment practices, and incentivized to do so."
