UAE To Expand Tax Payment Options From November

20 October 2020

The United Arab Emirates Federal Tax Authority has set out its plans to upgrade its eDirham system, which is used to pay state fees and taxes.

Through the latest iteration of eDirham, taxpayers will be able to make payments through a mobile application or through new eDirham cards, which will be available from more banks.

The FTA said it began rolling out the new eDirham system in October 2020 and said the new system will replace the existing one from November 2020. Taxpayers are able to use either the new or old system during October.

The FTA said VAT registrants should prepare to switch to the new version of the eDirham system by consuming and settling outstanding balances from the old version of the e-Dirham before the cards come to a complete stop at the end of October 2020. According to the FTA, the new generation of eDirham includes three cards. The FTA said: "The 'Hala Card' is a card suitable for new customers who want to make one-time payments. No registration or documents are required, and the card can be topped-up with a balance of up to AED3,500. The 'Gold Card' is a prepaid card with multiple recharge options, suitable for regular payments and multiple transactions. This card requires registration to provide an additional level of security. The 'Premium Card' is a customizable prepaid card that requires registration. It is suitable for individual and corporate customers with high balances without a maximum recharge limit."
