Trinidad And Tobago, US Deepen Customs Cooperation

by Mike Godfrey, Tax-News.com, Washington

22 September 2016

Trinidad and Tobago has signed a customs cooperation and information exchange treaty with the US.

Through the pact, the two territories will provide assistance to one another for the purpose of preventing and investigating customs offenses.

Trinidad and Tobago is the first Caribbean Community (CARICOM) member, a grouping of twenty countries in the region, to have signed an agreement of this kind with the US.

Announcing the deal, the Finance Ministry said signing the agreement represents a further step towards Trinidad and Tobago meeting deficiencies identified in a 2016 report by the Caribbean Financial Action Task Force, an organization of states and territories of the Caribbean basin that have agreed to implement common counter-measures against money laundering and terrorism financing.
