Tech Firms Sued Over Bluetooth Patent

by Glen Shapiro, LawAndTax-News.com, New York

13 April 2010

Canadian technology company WiLAN has commenced litigation in a US court claiming that almost 30 companies are infringing on its patent for Bluetooth technology.

WiLAN's suit, filed in the US District Court for the Eastern District of Texas, names Acer America Corporation, Apple, Inc., Belkin International, Inc., Dell, Inc., Hewlett-Packard Company, Intel Corporation, Lenovo Group Ltd., and Sony Corporation, among others.

In its filing, WiLAN claims that these companies have infringed and continue to infringe a US patent owned by the company by making and/or selling various products enabled with Bluetooth technology including cellular handsets and personal notebook computers. The technology in question prevents Bluetooth and wi-fi signals from interfering with one another.

WiLAN said that it is being represented by law firm McKool Smith, which has successfully defended the patent rights of many high profile companies throughout the US and has particular expertise in the Eastern District of Texas.

McKool Smith is also representing WiLAN in separate actions filed by the company on October 31, 2007 and June 20, 2008 in the US District Court for the Eastern District of Texas.
