Tajikistan Cleared To Join WTO In March

by Tatiana Smolenskaya, Tax-News.com, Moscow

07 February 2013

Tajikistan is to be welcomed as a member of the World Trade Organization (WTO) on March 2, 2013, after the nation concluded the ratification of its accession package.

In exchange for membership of the global trade body, the nation has agreed to accept "bound" rates, ie. maximum ceiling levels for all its import tariffs. These tariffs will be "ordinary customs duties" only, within committed levels, with no additional duties and charges. The average rate of Tajikistan's bound tariffs, for all products, will be 8%. For agricultural products this average is 10.4%, while for non-agricultural products the average is 7.6%.

Tajikistan has committed to apply its domestic taxes in a non-discriminatory manner to imports regardless of country of origin.

Tajikistan first began negotiating its accession to the WTO with its Working Party on July 18, 2001, having applied for membership on May 29, 2001. It completed its membership negotiations on October 26, 2012, when the Working Party adopted the accession package, which contains numerous commitments from the nation to liberalize its trading regime and reduce taxes on international trade. Tajikistan's accession package received final approval from the WTO's General Council on December 10, 2012.
