Taiwan, Philippines Move Towards FTA Talks

by Mary Swire, Tax-News.com, Hong Kong

07 December 2015

During this year's Taiwan-Philippines ministerial meeting held in Manila, the two sides formally established a working group to prepare for the start of talks on an economic cooperation agreement (ECA).

A statement from Taiwan's Ministry of Economic Affairs said that calls from its minister, John Deng, for the ECA's completion "as soon as possible" received a "positive response" from the Philippines' delegation, led by Cabinet Secretary Rene Almendras.

The Ministry also noted a similar response to its request for the Philippines' support, as a member of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), for Taiwan's possible participation in the current negotiations on the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP).

The RCEP is a proposed comprehensive trade treaty between the ten-member ASEAN and its six current free trade agreement partners, in which China is particularly involved.
