Taiwan Aims To Consolidate As Global Shipping Hub

Taiwan is seeking to consolidate its status as a major global shipping hub in the face of the rapid growth of Chinese ports under a growth plan announced by the Council for Economic Planning and Development (CEPD) this week.

According to Taiwan News, CEPD officials said that the government is aiming to maintain Kaohsiung Port as the world's sixth largest and boost the volume of containers handled by domestic commercial ports to 17.9 million twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs) by 2016, through the construction of a new terminal at the port.

By the end of the year, the CEPD expects that the volume of containers handled by domestic ports will reach 10 million TEUs, up from 9.47 million TEUs last year.

Lin Chih-ming, director-general of the Department of Aviation and Navigation under the Ministry of Transportation & Communications, said that he sees the Dutch port of Rotterdam - which saw its container-handling volume increasing from 8.3 million TEUs in 2004 to 9.3 million TEUs in 2005 - as Kaohsiung's major competitor.

As Taiwan's largest port, Kaohsiung handles more than 50% of the country's cargo volume, far higher than the country's three other major ports at Keelung, Taichung and Hualian. Kaohsiung also handles more than 70% of the country's containers, with 90% intended for transhipment.
