Switzerland, India To Hold Tax Talks

Swiss Foreign Minister Micheline Calmy-Rey is due to hold talks in New Delhi on August 30 with representatives of the Indian government, with discussions focussing on bilateral issues such as finance, science and regional and international themes.

Among the key topics of the talks will be the revision of the double taxation agreement between the two countries and the planned opening of a Consulate-General in Bangalore, which is to include an office for the promotion of cooperation in science and research (Swissnex). Other themes will concern issues of the environment, migration, and economic policy.

According to the Swiss federal administration, India is one of Switzerland’s main partners in Asia, and Switzerland’s fourth most important trade partner on the Asian continent. Relations have been strengthened since 1991 and a political dialogue introduced, it adds.

The federal administration states that: “With an economic growth rate of over 8%, India is gaining in importance. Among importing countries, Switzerland ranks seventh. More than 150 branch offices and joint ventures with Swiss enterprises make Switzerland the eleventh largest investor in India.”
