Sweden Unveils Eco Tax Strategy

by Ulrika Lomas, Tax-News.com, Brussels

10 October 2016

The Swedish Government has announced its intention to take additional tax measures to reduce household waste and encourage "sustainable consumption."

Sweden's "Strategy for sustainable consumption," unveiled on October 6, includes a proposal to cut the VAT rate on minor repairs to goods such as bicycles, clothes, and shoes from 25 percent to 12 percent, as announced in the Autumn 2016 Budget on September 20. It also proposes the introduction of a tax credit for the repair of white goods.

As part of the new policy, the Government has also proposed a specific tax on hazardous chemicals in certain electronic products.

The Government also confirmed that it intends to present new proposals on the taxation of air travel before the end of the year.
