An environmental tax on air travel was introduced in Sweden on April 1, 2018.
The new flight tax will add an extra charge to the cost of a commercial flight ranging from SEK60 (USD7.17) to SEK400, depending on the length of the journey. It applies to all passengers traveling by air from Sweden, with the exception of infants carried in the arms of their guardians.
Writing in the Swedish newspaper Dagens Nyheter, Climate Minister Isabella Lovin said that the tax is designed to minimize the carbon emissions from the aviation sector following a "sharp increase" in air travel.
