Sunreef To Launch New Catamaran Models

by Amanda Banks,, London

19 July 2012

Bespoke catamaran shipyard Sunreef Yachts has announced that it is to continue work within the superyacht segment, announcing plans for three new catamaran model launches on the back of two successful launches of catamaran-superyachts over 100 feet in 2010.

Sunseeker will this month launch its latest model, the Sunreef 82 Double Deck, the first of a series of 80ft composite superyachts. Other models on Sunreef's immediate schedule include the Sunreef 80 Single Deck, scheduled for March 2013, and an 85ft motoryacht catamaran, the 85 Sunreef Power, the development of which has just been completed and should launch at the end of 2013.

In the double deck concept, due to launch imminently, the vessel features one spacious owner cabin in the front, and a large and bright salon with an internal helm station with sea views. As with most catamaran models, due to its ability to cruise on sails, the yacht is both highly energy efficient and environmentally friendly compared with conventional motor yacht models. The yacht has capacity to accommodate up to seven guests, and two crew, in one beam-wide owner suite, one VIP queen cabin and one guest twin cabin convertible into a double cabin with an additional Pullman bed. The owner suite, arranged over two floors, is to occupy the entire forward section of the yacht with a master cabin, Jacuzzi and vanity on the main deck, and wardrobe and floor-to-ceiling storage and bathroom located below decks in port and starboard hulls, respectively.

The Sunreef 80 Single Deck is a dramatically different concept than the Sunreef 82 Double Deck, based on light displacement, performance and speed. The Sunreef 80 is intended for owners who wish to enjoy fast sailing adventures without giving up the comfort and fully customized interiors. Commissioned by a European owner, the Sunreef 80 will be made of an advanced composite sandwich combining epoxy-vinylester resin, PVC foam, glass fibre with carbon reinforcement for the hulls and carbon fibre for the deck and the superstructure, with a carbon mast and boom featuring a total sail area of 340 meters squared.

The vessel will weigh just 45 tons lightship and 60 tons fully loaded. Sunreef’s engineering office produced a special weighing platform that will register all additional weight of the boat. All systems will also be optimized to minimize their weight. The sleek and sporty exterior line was designed carefully to reduce windage and water resistance.

The yacht is designed to comfortably accommodate nine guests and four crew. The portside hull will comprise one guest cabin with a bathroom, a fully equipped galley and four crew cabins. The starboard hull will feature one guest and one children’s cabin, both with private en-suite bathrooms, with the owner’s dressing room and bathroom directly accessible from the master suite on the main deck. For the first time on a Sunreef single deck catamaran, the owner suite (measuring in at seventeen meters squared) will be located on the main deck. This means that the internal cockpit will include the navigation station, dining area, lounge zone and the owner suite on the front starboard.

The final model, the 85 Sunreef Power has been developed following the very successful launch of the 70 Sunreef Power in 2008. The concept aims to stress the superb space that catamarans offer thanks to their large beam, but its spacial arrangement will be similar to that on motoryachts. This means one huge main deck spanning the entire beam, with housing, dining and lounging areas, in both exterior aft deck and inside the saloon that together create a seamless, open space. The generously sized master cabin is located in the front on the same level. The flybridge will include helm station and two lounging areas (inside and outside) while the frontal intimate terrace on the main deck will comprise Jacuzzi and sun pads. Guest cabins with private bathrooms and crew quarters with direct access to the galley and storage will be located within the hulls.

On the aft, an interesting solution was found to create a beach club platform, typical for motoryachts. This platform will allow guests to stay down by the sea level at anchor and at lower speeds and will make easy accessing all water toys and tender stored in the aft dinghy garage.
