St Lucia Cuts Tax On Imported Eco-Friendly Cars

by Mike Godfrey, Tax-News.com, Washington

21 August 2014

Saint Lucia has announced lower rates of duty on the importation of electric and hybrid vehicles.

A new system for assessing tax liability will depend on the vehicle's age and, for hybrid vehicles, on engine capacity.

The tax burden on imported electric and hybrid vehicles will be as low as five percent import duty plus a charge of XCD1,000 (USD370). The maximum amount will be ten percent import duty, ten percent excise duty, and a charge of XCD6,000.

Value-added tax still applies to all vehicles.

These lower rates will apply for a period of 30 months from June 1, 2014, to November 30, 2016.
