St Kitts Growing As Prime Yachting Destination

Efforts by Caribbean territory Saint Kitts and Nevis to boost its appeal as a pleasure yachting destination, including through the development of world-class facilities, have begun to pay dividends, with the islands' Air and Sea Ports Authority reporting that yacht arrivals more than doubled in the first quarter.

The Authority reported that a total of 267 yachts dropped anchor during the first three months of the year compared to 83 in the same period in 2011, an increase of 222%. February saw the highest number of arrivals with 155, followed by March (65), and January (47). The number of passengers visiting St. Kitts and Nevis from yachts meanwhile increased 40% year-on-year, and has risen almost five-fold since 2010.

In addition to increased promotional efforts, the islands are currently undertaking the construction of new world-class marina facilities at Christophe Harbour and a further expansion of the Port Zante marina in Basseterre. Reforms are also under way to improve yacht entry rules and clearance administration to further modernize the islands' processes.

Highlighting the importance of the sector for the islands, Richard Skerritt, Minister for Tourism and International Transport, said: “Yachting is a lucrative economic sector in other neighbouring Caribbean jurisdictions and has been identified as a key component of the strategy for future growth of our tourism development. It is our government’s intention to build a positive environment for growth of the yachting sector, and for the overall development of our maritime and marine sectors.”
