Sri Lanka IRD Introduces E-Filing For VAT

by Mary Swire, Tax-News.com, Hong Kong

09 August 2016

The Sri Lankan Inland Revenue Department (IRD) has introduced an e-filing service for value-added tax (VAT) returns.

E-filing facilities are now available via the eServices section of the IRD Web Portal, for returns covering the month of April 2016 onwards. To complete an electronic return, a VAT taxpayer must have a Personal Identification Number (PIN), which can be obtained from either the IRD's Tax Services Unit or eServices.

It is compulsory for VAT taxpayers to submit schedules to their VAT return. If they fail to do so, their VAT return will not be accepted. If the aggregate number of entries in a VAT schedule is greater than 20, a taxpayer must submit their schedules electronically. Manual submission is still permitted where the aggregate number of VAT schedules is less than 20.
