South Africa Welcomes Increased Taxpayer Numbers

South Africa's Minister in the Presidency responsible for Planning, Monitoring, and Evaluation, Jeff Radebe, has welcomed an increase in taxpayer numbers, alongside the release of a new report on development

He noted that "tax revenue has grown significantly due to economic growth, a broader tax base and more effective revenue collection. The income tax register has been expanded from three million taxpayers in 1996 to almost 20m in 2013."

The new Development Indicators report confirmed that, over the period 2010/11 to 2013/14, the number of taxpayers registered for income tax increased by about seven million (55.2 percent). The register for individuals grew by 6.4m (62.2 percent), while the register for companies increased by 0.6m (29.2 percent).

Radebe added that the National Treasury's 2015 Budget Review indicated that "there is broad acceptance that South Africa's tax system is fair and efficient. It forms a part of the country's social compact, raising the revenue necessary to support public services."
