South Africa Produces VAT Guide For Motor Dealers

by Lorys Charalambous, Tax-News.com, Cyprus

South African Revenue Service (SARS) has issued an updated value-added tax (VAT) guide for vendors that supply motor cars and other vehicles in South Africa.

It is noted that a person that continuously or regularly supplies motor vehicles (for example, a motor dealer) will be required to register as a vendor, and levy VAT on all taxable supplies, if the compulsory VAT registration threshold of ZAR1m (USD73,000) in taxable supplies in any consecutive 12-month period is exceeded.

The guide covers, for example, the general principles concerning the VAT treatment of the supply of motor vehicles in South Africa; and the various types of supply which are made by motor dealers, particularly whether output tax must be declared by the motor dealer or by some other vendor in the case where the motor dealer has acted as an agent.

It also focuses on the differing VAT treatment between direct and indirect exports, as well as between new and second-hand motor vehicles, for dealers that are involved in exporting vehicles.
