South Africa Guaranteed US AGOA Access Until 2025

The South African Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) has confirmed that all contentious issues have been resolved, and that access for South Africa's agricultural goods into the United States under the African Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA) is now guaranteed until 2025.

AGOA allows almost all goods produced in AGOA-eligible countries to enter the US market duty-free. Earlier this year, there was the threat of a suspension of South Africa's eligibility for AGOA agricultural goods duty relief, unless South African non-tariff barriers to US poultry, pork, and beef were removed.

"South Africa has resolved all the issues to guarantee its access in AGOA until 2025," said the DTI's spokesperson Sidwell Medupe. "The issues relating to the three meats have been resolved, thus paving the way for continued preferential access into the US market for the duration of AGOA."

According to Medlupe, the South African Government's priority is now to increase market access opportunities for the country's other agricultural products into the United States. He disclosed that there are no current discussions on a possible free trade agreement between the United States and the Southern Africa Customs Union.
