Somali Pirates Release Ukrainian Ship

by Ulrika Lomas, for LawAndTax-News.com, Brussels

06 February 2009

A Ukrainian ship captured by Somali pirates is due to be released, it has been revealed.

The pirates captured the ship – which is loaded with military weapons – and all 20 crew members last September, and have since held it in Hobyo, just off the Somalian coast.

However, reports indicated on February 2 that the pirates are ready to release the ship in return for a USD3m ransom from the ship's owners.

Somalian pirates have hijacked a number of ships over the past 12 months, causing sea-based journeys through the region's waters to become notoriously high-risk.
