Samsung Heavy Industries (SHI) has announced the completion of its project to develop passenger boats to conform with new environmental regulations placed on Northern European operators. The new vessel reduces emissions of nitrogen oxide and sulphur oxides by more than 90% and substantially reduces running costs.

During a technical briefing, held to promote the new vessel to Northern European shippers, representatives from SHI disclosed that the vessel is 225m long and 31m wide, and can sail at 40km per hour with 300 trailers.

Kim Jing-wan, Vice Chairman and CEO of Samsung Heavy Industries commented: "[We have] developed this eco-friendly passenger boat to comply with the IMO standards for pollutant emissions which will take effect in 2015. We are working on diverse eco-friendly technologies that will give us an edge with European businesses, as part of our plan to enter the cruise ship market."

SHI has received praise for several of its environmentally-friendly projects including its passenger boat that it launched in Netherlands in 2006 - 'Maersk Dunkerque' is currently a nominee for Best Passenger Boat for its innovative ‘invisible smoke’ design, which makes emitted gases invisible. SHI also won the eco-friendly ship award for an oil tanker it entered in Nor-Shipping, the world’s largest ship fair held in June of 2009, a first for a Korean shipbuilder.
