SARS Warns Of South African Tax Deadline

by Lorys Charalambous, Tax-News.com, Cyprus

05 November 2013

The South African Revenue Service (SARS) has reminded all non-provisional taxpayers that the country's 2013 filing season will close on November 22, 2013.

For taxpayers who have not yet submitted their income tax returns, SARS has recommended that they do so via eFiling or electronically at a SARS branch. More and more South Africans are said to choose eFiling, which is available on a laptop or PC, on a mobile phone via the eFiling MobiSite and on a tablet with the SARS eFilng App, as their preferred way to complete their returns.

In addition, help is available while eFiling by accessing Help-You-eFile, a free service available to all eFilers that connects taxpayers to a SARS agent who assists in the completion of their tax returns.

A taxpayer submitting an income tax return after the deadline means the liability for an administrative penalty for non-compliance. The penalty imposed depends on a taxpayer's taxable income, and ranges up to ZAR16,000 (USD1,580) per month for each month that a return is outstanding. An unpaid penalty can, by law, also be deducted by SARS from a taxpayer's salary or bank account.

However, if an individual earns under ZAR250,000 annually from one employer, and has no other sources of additional income (for example, interest or rental income) or deductions to claim (for example, medical expenses, travel or retirement annuities), he or she does not need to submit a return.
