The amount of tax paid using Romania's recently introduced online portal surged in the first quarter of this year, according to the Electronic Payments Association in Romania.

Taxpayers in Romania paid almost RON50m (USD11.75m) in taxes on the Ghiseul.ro site in the first three months of 2017, a 258 percent increase over the same period in 2016, according to information presented at the recent EU payment card conference organized by Romanian business news website BankingNews.

At the same time, the number of transactions using the web portal increased 215 percent to just over 144,000.

Both individuals and companies are now able to use the Ghiseul.ro portal to pay numerous taxes and levies, including income tax, social security contributions, and tax fines.
