08 July 2008

The Paradip Port in India has handled a total traffic of 42.44 million tonnes (MT) of cargo in 2007-08 as against 38.51 MT in 2006-07, registering a growth of 10%, it was announced this week.

The traffic in the first quarter in 2008-09 registered a growth of 17.7% over the traffic during the corresponding period in 2007-08.

This information was delivered at a review meeting chaired by the Union Minister of Shipping, Road Transport & Highways Thiru T.R. Baalu on Monday.

Thiru T.R. Baalu commended the Port Authorities for completing six projects under the National Maritime Development Programme (NMDP), and asked them to accelerate efforts for completing the twelve projects which are currently being implemented.

The completed six projects include extension of iron ore berth to handle vessels of 75,000 DWT, creation of additional facilities for Oil Jetty, construction of integrated dry dock, upgrading of roads inside the wharf area, illumination of the wharf area, and replacement of wharf cranes.

The Minister was happy to note that dredging work for deepening of the channel commenced last month.

A new harbour mobile crane of 140 tonne capacity installed recently has enabled the port to handle the bulk cargo faster, he added.

The Minister was informed that with the provision of dry dock facilities at the port, vessels can now be repaired in-house and need not be sent to Kolkata, thus saving valuable time and resources.

Thiru T.R. Baalu directed the Port Authorities to expedite the work on the two PPP projects, both relating to the development of deep draught berths, one for handling iron ore and other for handling of coal.
