Pakistan To Push For Taxpayer, Revenue Growth

by Mary Swire, Tax-News.com, Hong Kong

Pakistan's Government intends to boost both taxpayer numbers and revenues, Pakistan's Special Assistant to the Prime Minister on Revenue, Haroon Akhtar Khan, said.

Describing the country's economy as "healthy and stable," the official suggested that Pakistan is in line to achieve six percent GDP growth in the current fiscal year, compared with the 5.3 percent growth recorded last year.

A similar growth trajectory is expected with regard to revenue collections, he said, which have grown 73 percent in the last four years, from PKR1.9 trillion in 2013 to PKR3.3 trillion (USD34.1bn) in 2017.

The Federal Board of Revenue is said to be targeting an increase in the number of filers this year to 1.4 million, and targeting PKR4 trillion in revenue.

The FBR has been seeking to broaden the country's taxpayer base through a variety of initiatives, including enlisting large companies to encourage their employees to comply with their individual tax obligations. The tax agency has provided assistance to more than 50 large corporations, financial institutions, and companies headquartered in the country, as "a majority of their employees with taxable income are failing to fulfill a national obligation by not filing their income tax returns."
