Pakistan Committee Concerned at NATO's Minimal Tax Payments

The Pakistani Senate Standing Committee on Ports and Shipping has expressed its concern over the fact that NATO trucks heading for Afghanistan are paying next to no tax for entry into Pakistan at the Qasim International Container Terminal. The trucks are carrying oil and other supplies for the forces fighting in Pakistan’s neighbouring country.

The Senate Committee was informed that an average of 86 NATO containers or trucks were being cleared through the Port on a daily basis, and the port authorities were only receiving PKR410 (USD5) as toll tax for each one. Vice-Admiral Muhammad Shafi, Chairman of the Port Qasim Authority, said that the Port had received PKR136.8m (USD1.62m) from NATO between July 2008 and March 2011.

The main complaint from the Senate Committee was that the NATO tankers had caused considerable damage to Pakistan’s highways, and it therefore believed that the Organization should bear at least some of the cost of repairs.
