Over 1m Australians Use E-Filing

by Mary Swire,, Hong Kong

07 August 2012

Over a million Australians have already lodged their tax returns for the last financial year using the Australian Taxation Office's (ATO) e-tax service.

"Tax time" began just over a month ago. Last year, the 1m online return mark was hit after five weeks. According to Tax Commissioner Michael D'Ascenzo, this milestone also brings the total number of lodgments since the official launch of e-tax in 1999 to 18.5m. He added that last year 2.6m used e-tax to lodge their tax return, with almost 74% choosing to use the pre-fill service.

The ATO's pre-filling service downloads information received from employers, financial institutions, government agencies and others straight into the relevant questions in e-tax. All that remains for the taxpayer to do is check their information and add any missing details.

The ATO says that its work with employers, financial institutions and others to ensure this information is available as early as possible means that it has already received more than 65% of the expected information for this year.

"The ATO is committed to making the lodgment of income tax returns fast and easy. This year most Australian taxpayers who are expecting a refund and lodge electronically will have it in 12 business days or less," D'Ascenzo stressed.
