Oracle, the global software and database company is to establish a centre of excellence in Mauritius as part of a project aimed at promoting the development of the ICT sector in the jurisdiction.

Speaking at the launch of the Oracle Training Programme for Database Administrators last week, Minister of Information Technology and Telecommunications, Etienne Sinatambou, said that work on the new centre will begin before the end of the year.

The primary objective of the programme is to provide public officers, in particular from the Central Informatics Bureau and the Central Information Systems Division, with insight into the creation and maintenance of the Oracle database system.

Sinatambou said that that Oracle Systems has joined the State of Mauritius as a strategic partner in the Information and Communication Technology (ICT) sector. The centre will be the first of its type in Africa.

Sinatambou also announced that, following negotiations with network management company Cisco International, complete Cisco training courses would soon be available in Mauritius.

The latest initiative is one of a number of schemes put in place by the government to promote a more computer literate population, Sinatambou explained, which have also included the Universal ICT Education Programme and the 95% discount on IT professional courses offered by the Cyberlearning Foundation.

The Oracle Training Programme for Database Administrators is the result of the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed by the Ministry of Information Technology and Telecommunications and Oracle Systems on May 17, 2006.

The MoU provides a facilitation framework for the implementation of e-Government initiatives, the further development of ICT culture and enhancement capacity building in the sector as well as the adoption of best practices in ICT.
