Oracle Racing Dominates AC World Series Regattas

30 August 2012

Hosts Oracle Team USA snapped up the two championship titles at the first event in the 2012-13 America's Cup World Series, held in San Francisco on August 21-26, 2012.

The World Series, held as a warm-up ahead of the America's Cup main event in San Francisco in 2013, features both match races, where teams pit themselves against each other in heads-up races; and fleet races, a free-for-all involving the entire 11-boat field.

Four-time America's Cup winner and twice World Sailor of the Year, Russell Coutts of Oracle Racing 4 prevailed in the Match Racing Championship beating his teammate, reigning America's Cup World Series Champion, Jimmy Spithill of Oracle Racing 5. In a race that saw the lead change hands three times, Coutts eked out a one-second victory with both boats crossing the finish line at over twenty knots. For Coutts, the match racing title was his second consecutive, coming on the heels of a victory in Newport at the beginning of July, which wrapped up the 2011-12 racing season.

Forty minutes later, in the fleet race regatta, Spithill found himself in another charge to the finish line. This time, a crucial penalty against Team Korea (led by Nathan Outteridge) secured his team the second place needed for a 1-point victory in the final rankings. Luna Rossa Piranha (Chris Draper) won the fleet race finale by just 3 seconds.

The event, featuring 45-foot catamarans, is held in the lead-up to the Louis Vuitton Cup, where teams will compete for an opportunity to challenge BMW Oracle Racing, the defenders of the 2010 America's Cup, at the 34th America's cup to be held in San Francisco in 72-foot catamarans in 2013.

A second fixture in the four-event World Series will again be held in San Francisco on October 2-7, 2012, and will also be broadcast worldwide.
