Nigerians To Need Tax Certificates To Get Passports

05 December 2016

The Executive Chairman of Nigeria's Federal Inland Revenue Service, Babatunde Fowler, has disclosed that the Nigerian Government is to introduce a requirement for an individual to show a tax certificate before obtaining or renewing a passport.

On November 28, at a meeting of the Joint Tax Board held in Abuja, which looked at increased inter-government agency co-operation to enhance tax compliance, he said that without evidence of tax payment, or the prior payment of all tax debts, individuals would not be able to get a passport from the Nigeria Immigration Department.

Earlier in the year, FIRS had said that it wanted to substantially increase the numbers of taxpayers in 2016. The target was to add five million new individual taxpayers to the country's tax register by December 2016. Previously, according to figures recently released by the National Tax Policy Review Committee, only 10 million of the country's total population of 180 million had paid tax.
