Netherlands Updates Tax Treaty Negotiation Program

by Ulrika Lomas, Tax-News.com, Brussels

01 May 2013

Underlining the Government's ongoing commitment to concluding bilateral tax treaties with other countries, the Dutch Finance Ministry has recently listed the countries with which the Netherlands plans to begin negotiations on a tax treaty this year.

In 2013, the Dutch Government intends to initiate tax talks with Costa Rica, Malawi, Poland, Spain, Tajikistan, Tanzania, Uruguay, South Africa, and South Korea. The Government aims to conclude either a new or revised tax treaty with these countries. The bilateral tax accords are designed to prevent the double taxation of individuals or citizens, and to ensure that tax is paid. This is achieved by distributing the taxing rights between the Netherlands and the treaty partner state, within the framework of the agreement.

The Dutch Finance Ministry explains that entrepreneurs and individuals are welcome to submit their comments in writing to the Finance Ministry, to contribute to the ongoing or planned negotiations, and to suggest any other countries that should be added to the Government's negotiating program for the coming years.

The Netherlands' tax treaty list is updated quarterly by the Dutch Foreign Affairs Ministry.
