Netherlands Postpones Tax Deadline For Small Traders

06 February 2020

The Dutch Ministry of Finance has announced that around 24,000 small traders will be able to defer their wage tax declarations this year due to problems with the Government's new online portal for businesses.

The problems concern the new "eHerkenning" system, a one-stop-shop system that allows business users to securely connect with more than 400 government agencies and service providers. Its use has been mandatory since January 1, 2020, but the Finance Ministry said that a number of small traders have been unable to fully utilize the scheme.

The deferral applies to taxpayers who must use the eHerkenning to access the tax authority's "My Tax Office for Business" online portal, as well as to, among others, those using third-party providers or software to file their tax returns, the ministry said.

As a result, around 24,000 taxpayers will be able to defer filing their wage tax return until July 1, 2020, the ministry confirmed. The taxpayers in question will be automatically granted this extension, and the tax authority intends to inform those affected by letter in due course.

For corporate income tax returns with a filing deadline of May 31, the normal procedure for applying for a five-month extension still applies, the ministry said.
