NZ Looks To Join International IP Protocol

New Zealand looks likely to sign an international protocol on the registration of trademarks, as it undertakes an ‘operational preparedness’ test to ready itself.

The Madrid Protocol provides an international regime for the registration of trademarks. Under the so-called "Madrid system", New Zealand's businesses will be able to file a single application directly with the Intellectual Property Office of New Zealand (IPONZ) and designate one or more overseas countries where protection is sought. At present, separate applications must be submitted in each relevant country.

According to Commerce Minister Craig Foss, joining the Protocol will make it easier for entrepreneurs to protect their ideas. New Zealand will now become the first country to undertake an ‘operational preparedness’ test before it implements the Protocol.

Foss met with the Director General of the World Intellectual Property Organisation, Francis Gurry, to discuss New Zealand’s accession to the Protocol. He stressed that the country's online trademark registration system will easily satisfy the required criteria.

Foss added, “When New Zealand is fully signed up, Kiwi companies will have a one-stop-shop for worldwide trade mark registration. We’re a world leader in the area of online trade mark registration and I’m confident we’ll pass the application test with flying colours."
