Mexico Negotiating FTAs With Jordan, Turkey

by Mike Godfrey, Tax-News.com, Washington

16 July 2014

The foreign ministers of Mexico and Jordan agreed to launch free trade agreement negotiations during a recent meeting to discuss how to boost trade relations.

Mexican Secretary of Foreign Affairs José Antonio Meade Kuribreña said following the meeting with his Jordanian counterpart that the first round of FTA negotiations will begin in August this year.

The secretary said that Mexico recognizes the global importance of Jordan, and wants to strengthen political, economic, and trade cooperation with the Middle Eastern country.

Nasser Yudeh, Jordan's Minister of Foreign Affairs, pointed out that an FTA with Mexico would be Jordan's first such agreement with a Latin American country. Jordan already has FTAs with the United States and Canada, Mexico's partners in the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA).

Mexico is also in the process of negotiating an FTA with Turkey. The first round of negotiations took place over three days concluding on July 16, 2014, in Ankara, Turkey. Mexican exports to Turkey amounted to USD358.1m last year.
