Merkel Prioritizes Corporate Tax Harmonization With France

by Ulrika Lomas, Tax-News.com, Brussels

05 March 2018

German Chancellor Angela Merkel has suggested that Germany and France will soon press ahead with plans to harmonize aspects of their corporate tax regimes.

Merkel made the comments in her weekly podcast, published on March 3, in which she said that Germany and France have decided to place "more emphasis than in the past" on the proposal, and that both governments will "push on with the common corporation tax" idea.

Merkel also indicated that the decision to expedite the harmonization plans has been influenced partly by the tax reforms that have taken place in the United State, saying that "we will also consider the realities that are unfolding in America."

While no specific timetable has been drawn up for the plan to link the two countries' corporate tax systems, Merkel said that she hoped that some progress would have been made by the end of 2018.

Speaking after his meeting with German counterpart Peter Altmaier on January 18, French Finance Minister Bruno Le Marie said that the two governments want to agree a joint position on convergence issues, including in the area of corporate taxation, by mid-2018.

By taking the lead on tax harmonization, France and Germany are hoping to encourage other member states to support the proposed European Union common consolidated corporate tax base, a measure to which many EU countries are known to be hostile –  most notably Ireland.
