Mauritius and Pakistan have agreed to deepen trade and economic relations through a comprehensive partnership agreement that would cover trade in goods and services, investment, economic and technical cooperation.

In remarks made at the end of the Fourth Session of the Joint Working Group Meeting between Mauritius and Pakistan, Mr A. Neewoor, the Secretary for Foreign Affairs in the Mauritius government, said that both sides have agreed to expedite the process leading to the signature of the Preferential Trade Agreement in November 2006 in Islamabad.

He noted that the texts of the PTA, Rules of Origin and Customs Cooperation have been finalized and discussions will be pursued with a view to finalizing the tariff concessions.

Regarding the Mauritian request on textiles and clothing, Mr Neewoor revealed that Pakistan has offered Mauritius a 50% tariff cut at the beginning of the agreement year and a full liberalization after 12 months on a few specific tariff lines. Mauritius has requested that Pakistan improve its offer, especially in tariff lines where Mauritian operators have potential for exports.

Pakistan had made a similar offer to Mauritius on certain non-textile products including fresh cut flowers, fish products, black tea, sugar confectionery and pasta. Furthermore, Mauritius has been granted market access to special sugars in Pakistan.
