An aviation double taxation agreement (DTA) signed between Taiwan and Macau on December 10 is expected to boost air transport, commerce, and tourism flows between the two places.
The agreement grants airline companies from either place a reciprocal tax exemption. It allows airlines from either Taiwan or Macau to pay income taxes only in their jurisdiction of residence, and covers both passenger and freight operations, as well as the deduction of equipment and maintenance costs.
The DTA makes permanent provisions included in a temporary bilateral memorandum of understanding.
According to Ministry of Transportation data, there are currently 93 flights operated by three Taiwanese airlines – EVA Air, TransAsia Airways and Tigerair Taiwan – into Macau each week, while Air Macau operates 35 flights per week to Taiwan.
