MPAA Campaign Against BitTorrent Sites Claims First Big Victim

by Robin Pilgrim, LawAndTax-News.com, London

It appears this week that the Motion Picture Association of America's (MPAA) campaign against BitTorrent server operators, launched last week, has claimed its most prominent victim to date.

BitTorrent and its counterparts Direct Connect and eDonkey have become increasingly popular with those seeking to share large movie files, due to their seeming immunity to industry attempts to infiltrate the networks with bogus files.

End users of the service are able to access movies by following the links offered by the targets of the MPAA lawsuits, and files can be shared by multiple users at the same time, unlike on the majority of P2P services.

According to reports in the technology media, in a statement released following the MPAA's filing of more than 100 lawsuits in the United States and UK, Suprnova.org announced its partial closure, explaining that:

"We are very sorry for this, but there was no other way, we have tried everything."

The server's operators went on to add that if the site does return to its full form at some point in the future, it will not be hosting BitTorrent links.

Also reporting on the MPAA's legal campaign this week, the BBC suggested that the recent closure of Phoenix Torrents was likely to have been motivated by the Association's actions.
