MEPs Seek Stronger Tax Rules For Sharing Economy

Members of the European Parliament (MEPs) have called for greater parity in the tax obligations imposed by the EU upon businesses operating in the traditional and sharing economies.

In a plenary session of the European Parliament, MEPs approved a non-binding resolution by 510 votes to 60, with 48 abstentions.

The report adopted stressed that "the collaborative economy should never be used as a way of avoiding tax obligations."

MEPs called for innovative solutions to improve tax compliance in the sharing economy, and urged platforms participating in the sector to collaborate in securing such improvements.

MEPs recommended that the European Commission "facilitate exchange of best practices among member states to develop effective and innovative solutions enhancing tax compliance and enforcement, in order to eliminate the risk of cross-border fraud."

Rapporteur Nicola Danti said: "A European strategy on the collaborative economy is indispensable. The objective must be to prevent different rules from applying to similar services in the traditional and in the collaborative economies, both in terms of market access and tax collection, thus ensuring fair competition between online and offline operators and among them and them and the so-called prosumers."
