Launch Of S Korea-Israel FTA Talks On June 27

by Mary Swire, Tax-News.com, Hong Kong

14 June 2016

The South Korean Ministry of Trade, Industry, and Energy (MOTIE) has confirmed that negotiations on a bilateral free trade agreement (FTA) with Israel will commence on June 27 in Seoul.

A joint feasibility study on the FTA was completed in August 2010, but the decision to begin talks was then delayed. MOTIE announced the commencement of talks at a press briefing by Deputy Minister for Trade Lee In-ho on June 13.

The FTA is expected to boost the current low level of trade between the two countries. Both sides have indicated their willingness to conclude a comprehensive agreement covering trade in goods and services, investment access, and technology cooperation.

It is felt that cooperation can be developed, particularly in technology start-ups, high-tech industries such as aerospace, and agriculture and food.
