Jersey To Host English Channel Boat Race

14 December 2009

To recognize recent ties between Normandy and Jersey on maritime issues, Jean-François Le Grand, President of the Conseil général de la Manche, has invited Jersey to host the start of the 2010 Tour des Ports de la Manche yacht race.

On December 5, 2009, on the invitation of Le Grand, Jersey Chief Minister, Senator Terry Le Sueur attended the Paris Boat Show. The invitation was an outcome of the increasingly successful partnership that has developed between Jersey and Normandy over recent years.

Jersey Harbours exhibited alongside La Manche at the week-long show, which ended on December 13. The aim of its exhibit was to promote Jersey as a prime yacht destination, create business opportunities for Jersey's marine industries, and celebrate Jersey's shared maritime history with La Manche.

During the visit, Le Grand announced that the 2010 Tour des Ports de la Manche will, for the first time, start from Jersey's capital, St Helier, on July 11, 2010.

Welcoming Le Grand’s announcement, Le Sueur said: "It will be an honor for Jersey to host the start of this important race.”

"The Tour des Ports attracts more than 100 yachts and 700 crew members every year so this is an exciting opportunity for Jersey to showcase itself as a key destination in maritime tourism. I am indeed grateful for the support of our colleagues in the Conseil général de la Manche and have invited them to attend the Jersey Boat Show in May next year."

The Tour des Ports de la Manche comprises seven legs, the first from Jersey to Western France, and ends five days later having passed through five ports – Granville, Barneville-Carteret, Guernsey, Port Dielette, Cherbourg-Octeville – before it ends in Saint-Vaast la Hougue, in the north of France, on July 16, 2010.
