Jersey Showcased At Indian Tax Conference

by Jason Gorringe, Tax-News.com, London

07 December 2012

Geoff Cook, the Chief Executive of Jersey's promotional agency, Jersey Finance, attended the International Tax Conference in Mumbai on December 6, 2012, as part of a week-long trip to highlight the strengths of Jersey's financial services industry and regulatory regime.

Ahead of leaving for India, Cook said he would use the trip as an opportunity to highlight the island's prime position as a gateway to investment in Europe, and as a key centre for wealth management.

He said key initiatives to enhance cooperation with Indian regulators, and to increase awareness of the jurisdiction's financial services offering in India have led to Jersey's message being well received in the country - a key, high-growth market for Jersey financial services businesses.

Cook commented: "Jersey has been strengthening its bonds with India since the mid-1970s; not only in the finance sector but also in the fields like IT and the socio-cultural sphere. The robust regulatory regime in Jersey has been instrumental in instilling confidence in the Indian business communities and the government of India."

In November 2011, to enhance transparency and strengthen ties with the Indian government, Jersey signed its 25th bilateral tax information exchange agreement with India, to establish a legal framework for the two territories' tax agencies to share tax data.

Jersey Finance sponsored the International Taxation Conference, where Cook gave a talk entitled "Jersey - a Centre of Quality and Substance." He highlighted Jersey’s strengths in capital markets activities, and in particular the use of Jersey companies to list on international stock exchanges; and also Jersey’s private wealth expertise and experience, notably its flexible estate and tax planning structures, and frameworks for the protection of assets and confidentiality.
