Jersey Ratifies BEPS Multilateral Instrument

by Jason Gorringe, Tax-News.com, London

26 December 2017

Jersey has become one of only three jurisdictions to ratify the BEPS multilateral instrument (MLI) to revise tax treaties to counter base erosion and profit shifting (BEPS).

The MLI was developed by the OECD under Action 15 of the BEPS project. Countries who have decided to adopt it will transpose BEPS recommendations into their tax treaties, in particular to prevent tax treaty abuse and better resolve double tax disputes with other countries.

The other two "early adopters" are Austria and the Isle of Man. To come into effect in Jersey, the MLI must be ratified by a further two jurisdictions.

Jersey's Minister for External Relations, Philip Bailhache, said: "Our ratification brings the Multilateral Instrument's entry into force one step closer. I am delighted that Jersey is one of the founding five signatories of the Multilateral Instrument. This is further confirmation of the important role that we continue to play in helping to develop and implement international standards in tax good governance."
