Japan Planning Higher Taxes On Tourists

The Japan Tourism Agency is considering a departure tax to raise funds for promoting Japan as a tourist destination overseas.
JTA Commissioner Akihiko Tamura told local media last month that proposals for a departure tax were being developed, and that it would apply to both Japanese citizens and foreign visitors leaving the country.
It has been estimated that a departure tax of JPY1,000 (USD9) would generate revenues of about JPY24bn (USD217m) annually. However, arrivals to Japan are expected to surge in 2020, when Tokyo will host the Olympic and Paralympic Games.
Kyoto is also reportedly considering joining Tokyo and Osaka in charging a per-night accommodation tax and is expected to table legislation in September.
