Irish Revenue Reminds Taxpayers Of Claims Deadline

by Jason Gorringe, Tax-News.com, London

27 November 2017

The Irish Revenue has issued a reminder to taxpayers that there is a four-year time limit for claiming tax back, with the deadline for 2013 claims falling on December 31, 2017.

Leeann O'Kelly, Manager in Revenue's Planning Division, said: "You can claim back tax that you have overpaid for any of the last four years, and ensure that you claim all your entitlements for future years. You can do all this easily and conveniently online, using PAYE Services in myAccount."

In October 2016, Revenue wrote to more than 137,500 PAYE workers who had not claimed any additional tax reliefs or credits in the four years since 2012. It has now published an analysis of the impacts of this activity.

In the six months after the letters were sent, 15 percent of recipients requested a review, claimed credits, reliefs, or exemptions, or declared additional income. A total of EUR27.6m (USD32.9m) was refunded or credited to taxpayers as a result of these claims.

The two most frequent activities resulting from the letters were taxpayers claiming relief on health expenses and on flat rate expenses, which made up 40 percent and 21 percent, respectively, of all claims and declarations.

Before the letters were sent, 45,719 of the recipients were registered for the online myAccount service. After six months, this figure had risen by 26 percent, to 57,425.

Since September 2017, Revenue has written to more over 135,000 PAYE taxpayers to advise them of the tax credits and reliefs available, and to remind them of the four-year statutory time limit for claiming such entitlements.
