International Focus Turns To Seafarers' Pensions

by Amanda Banks, Tax-News.com, London

International maritime union, Nautilus has backed calls for a further enhancement to the Maritime Labor Convention 2006 to add provisions to ensure seafarers the right to adequate pensions.

Welcoming the entry into force of the landmark Maritime Labor Convention on August 20, 2013, Nautilus' General Secretary Mark Dickinson underscored that the Pact "will not only provide a framework for decent living and working conditions in the shipping industry, but also the building blocks for further long-term improvements in employment practices."

Against this background, it welcomed the launch by the International Labor Organization of work towards introducing a mandatory requirement in the MLC 2006 to enhance and secure retirement/pension provisions for seafarers.

In support of this agenda, Nautilus has undertake a survey involving its members to collate data that the ILO can use to champion an amendment to the MLC.

The union said: "Nautilus is assisting the ILO in conducting a survey to acquire data from seafarers globally on their current entitlements and rights to contribute to a pension scheme that would provide tangible benefits in old age. It is therefore very much in our interests to ensure that the information collected is as comprehensive as possible."

The Union underscored that the survey will be on a confidential basis with no personal details collected. "The data provided will help to build a clear and comprehensive picture of the current situation and the case for longer-term improvements in seafarers’ working conditions," the union explained.
